Headphones - Fostex TH 900

CASQUE FOSTEX TH 900

Red passion....

I-INTRODUCTION.

The FOSTEX company has been created in 1973 by Foster Electric Co. Ltd (1949), one of the major OEM manufacturer in the Speakers domain. This company employs more than 20,000 employees in 9 countries.

So there is no doubt that if this company wants to create a high end device, it will face no problem !...

This review relates to the top of the line TH-900.

II-TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS.

Let us start with the Manufacturer technical specifications:

Brand FOSTEX
Type High Fidelity
Link Cable
Frequency response 5 Hz to 45 kHz
Cable length 3 meters
Impedance 25 Ohm
Sensitivity 100 dB/V
Connector Jack 6.35mm and 3.5mm
Weigth 400 gr

We immediately see that the impedance is low (very good point) and the efficiency is high (another excellent point).

II-OVERVIEW.

The TH-900 is the first headphone from FOSTEX to use a 50mm driver made with cellulose , like the famous SONY CD-3000, and more importantto use a magnet producing a field of 5 Tesla (according to the manfacturer specs)...

It uses a wonderful red « URUSHI » cover, and receives a very high quality copper OFC cable 7N (!).

Here are a few photos of the manufacturing process and cover:

IV-THE LISTENING CONFIGURATION.

Our listening configuration remains unchanged in order to keep a stable comparison point.

Here it is:

V-THE LISTENING SESSION.

The listening session has always been conducted by comparison with other headphones, the famous: SONY CD3000, GRADO PS1000 and AUDEZE LCD2 rev.2.

It is a true privilege to own all these excellent headphones and I have to admit that this one is clearly apart the others ! It is not the most expensive, not the heaviest, not the most beautiful, but it is just THE BEST...

It is neutral, dense, with a lot of weigth on each note, a lot of punchy bass, going even lower and deper than the AUDEZE LCD-2 !...

These headphones achieve a true exceptional performance, and you need no more than 15 minutes  to understand that it has no competitor. Period.

We do not know if this exceptional musicaliy is due to the ultra light cellule manufactured by the « micro organisms » (according to the Manufacturer), that remind us the same manufacturing process used by SONY for its CD3000 flagship model : there is a lot of chance that this process is the key of its performance...

The TH-900 is my new absolute reference and all the other headphones are about to be sold.

Pros:

  • High quality, high musicality, impressive on the entire range
  • Dynamics and speed
  • Wood PAD and URUSHI laqued
  • Excellent bass with a lot of impressive qualities
  • Excellent level of detail
  • Neutral
  • Low impedance and high efficiency
  • Light enough: 400gr

Cons:

  • The look might be better
  • The isolation is just in the average for a closed headphone
  • The finish is in the average
  • Requires preferably a « soft » DAC, like the FOSTEX HPA-8C for example
  • Price is very high: 1,800€ in France...
